Understanding Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a traditional technique used in Chinese medicine that uses gentle suction on the skin. Traditionally, it is believed to support the movement of Qi—the body’s vital energy—and encourage circulation in areas that feel tight, sore, heavy, or restricted.

Many clients enjoy cupping as part of a bodywork session because of its unique lifting sensation. Unlike massage, which applies pressure downward into the tissue, cups create a gentle pull upward on the skin and superficial tissue. Some clients describe the experience as warming, releasing, and deeply relaxing, particularly in tired or overworked areas.

At Pure Therapy, cupping is offered as an optional tool to complement bodywork and lymphatic treatments. Traditional fire cupping uses a brief flame inside a glass cup to create suction; the flame is never placed on the skin. The treatment itself can feel warm, soothing, and restorative, and suction is always adjusted to your comfort.

Cupping Marks

Cupping may leave temporary circular marks that range from light pink or red to purple or brown. These marks are a normal response to suction and usually fade over several days, though they may last longer depending on your skin, hydration, medications, and tendency to bruise. Temporary marks and mild soreness are known possible effects of cupping. Your therapist will discuss your goals, comfort level, and relevant health history before beginning.

Cupping is not appropriate for every client or every area of the body. Please let us know if you are pregnant, take blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding or clotting condition, easily bruise, have broken or irritated skin, a rash, active infection, varicose veins, recent injury, or any health concern that may affect your session.
